The Parent’s Guide
With so much going on in the world, it’s easy for parents to feel overwhelmed and discouraged by the thought of academic travel. Our goal: Create a handbook that 1) helps parents see the benefits of student travel, 2) let parents know that we understand their concerns, and 3) that in the end, travel is good-scary.
(If you’re wondering what good-scary is: It’s being at the top of the rollercoaster. It’s speaking up in a crowd of strangers—and being glad you did. It’s the things that get our hearts racing and that lead the way for long-term growth. And it’s at the heart of travel.)
Writing this piece was a balancing act. On one hand, no one knows children better than their parents — we’d never say anything different. On the other hand, academic travel delivers once-in-a-lifetime experiences and letting children go out into the world and explore it is part of it. Using language that both highlights the value of travel while also expressing authentic understanding of parents’ fears was crucial for the guide’s success.
